  1. What is Youtopik.com?

    Youtopik.com is the greatest socially generated index of the web (or at least that is what we want it to be). It is social because it is made by you, your friends and everybody else who wants to contribute something to the world by organizing the multimedia resources (links, news, images, video, etc.) of the web.

  2. Ok, but what is it then?

    Youtopik.com is a web tool that lets people contribute and organize all the multimedia content of the web by topics so that everybody can see it, rank it, comment it and share it. You can think of it as a human-made search engine with social features (web 3.0, anyone?)

  3. How can I use Youtopik.com?

    There are plenty of uses that we can imagine, for example:

    • To find, share and promote the more relevant information and content about popular topics

    • To create specific "niche" topics for groups or communities (fan clubs, science clubs, etc.)

    • To gather information and valuable content about a topic for a school project (the topic you create can be very useful for other people later)

    • etc...

    We're sure there are many more possibilities that we haven't even imagined, so it's up to you how you use the service.

  4. Can I search for any topic?

    Yes, you can search for anything. In the case you don't find the particular topic you're looking for, you can explore related topics or even better, you can create the topic yourself! As more and more people create topics and add content into those topics, Youtopik will be a better and richer tool for everyone.

  5. Can I create any topic?

    Of course! The idea behind Youtopik is that there will be very popular topics mixed with "niche" topics (for example, a particular topic of interest for your college classmates). Under this assumption, any topic is acceptable (as long as it doesn't violate the Terms of Service).

  6. Can I create a private topic?

    Not at this time. For now, everything you upload to Youtopik is public, but it's possible we'll offer that capability in a later version.

  7. What kinds of content can I add to a topic?

    At this time, you can add:

    • Links to web pages

    • Links to videos from some popular video sites

    • Direct links to images and links to images hosted on some popular image hosting sites

    • Links to news from news sites

    • Text comments written directly on Youtopik's topic pages

    We're working to include support for many other types of content in the near future.

  8. How does the rating system works?

    Every content published on Youtopik can be rated (or voted) with +1 or -1. As simple logic suggests, a +1 indicates the content is liked and recommended while a -1 indicates the opposite. These votes are added by our system and the content is displayed ordered by those ratings.

  9. Am I required to register/log in to the site?

    At this time, registration and/or log in is not required but highly encouraged. You can read and explore the site as an anonymous user but if you want to create topics, add or rate content while being anonymous, you're required to enter CAPTCHA text each time you perform an action in order to avoid automated usage of the site. When you register and log into the site, you can avoid this and have many other benefits like:

    • You can be properly attributed for your contributions

    • You can save your favorite topics (for future reference)

    • You can have your own profile

    Among other benefits to come.

  10. Can I post content in other languages?

    Not at this time. Actually you can post whatever you want but for now the site focuses only in the english speaking public so it is probable that content in different languages would receive negative votes and loose any relevance. We intend to release versions of the site for different languages as soon as we are able to do so.

  11. What is the "report" button?

    It is the button where you can report content that is illegal or spammy (shameless advertising that doesn't bring value to a particular topic). We review reported content and delete any content found violating our Terms of Service.

  12. What is the "Quick add" button?

    It opens a window where you can add content to any existing topic in Youtopik from anywhere else in the system. It's goal is to make it easier and quicker to add content to any topic.

  13. Can I delete any content or topics?

    At this time you can't. Once you publish any content in Youtopik, that content is available to the public (however, as most of the content you can publish are links to other public web resources, such content was already available to the public).

    It's important to note that Youtopik is a project that is continually evolving and we'll be reviewing many of this features based on, among other things, all the feedback we get from you, so expect many general improvements in the near future.
